How to Distinguish Lift vs Lower PTO Pressure Switches

PTO pressure switches used in Massey Ferguson tractors such as 6400, 7400, and 8400 series often come in two similar versions: Lift and Lower. They may look almost identical, but their functions are different in the hydraulic system.

Lift vs Lower – What’s the Difference?

Lift PTO Pressure Switch: controls or detects the lifting (upward) function in the hydraulic/PTO system

Lower PTO Pressure Switch: controls or detects the lowering (return/downward) function

The key difference is not in appearance, but in internal pressure calibration and system position.

Why They Are Easy to Confuse

Both versions usually share:

Same housing design

Same connector type

Similar OEM part numbers

That is why visual inspection alone is not enough for identification.

How to Identify Correctly

To avoid mistakes, always check:

OEM part number

Tractor model application

Function requirement (Lift or Lower)

Never rely only on appearance.
