What is dip switch?

A DIP switch, or dual in-line package switch, is a small electronic switch that is packaged in a rectangular package with two parallel rows of pins that are designed to fit into a socket on a printed circuit board. DIP switches are typically used to configure or set the operating mode of electronic devices, such as computers, modems, routers, and other types of electronic equipment.

DIP switches consist of a series of small, individual switches that can be set to either on or off positions. The switches are arranged in a row, with each switch controlling a particular setting or function of the device. The number of switches and the functions they control can vary depending on the device and the manufacturer.

DIP switches are commonly used to set configuration parameters for computer hardware, such as setting the speed of the serial port, the interrupt level used by a device, or the amount of memory installed in a computer. They are also used in other types of electronic equipment, such as security systems, remote controls, and industrial controllers.

DIP switches are typically designed for low-voltage and low-current applications, and are often used in conjunction with other types of electronic components, such as resistors, capacitors, and integrated circuits. They are relatively easy to use and are popular because they provide a simple and cost-effective method for configuring and setting the operation of electronic devices.
